AMA Venous blood collection tubes can be divided into 3 main categories:

1) Evacuated serum tubes
3 types based on the inside tube addictive matters---
a. red cap tube: with no addictive, used for serum determinations in Chemistry, Biochemistry & Immunology, serology study;

b. orange cap tube: with clot activator, used for blood collection & conventional serum determinations (clinical biochemistry /immunity study etc);

c. yellow cap tube: with clot activtor & gel, the barrier gel can separate serum from fibrin & cells & allow stability of parameters in blood for 48 hours, mainly used for quick serum measurement & immunology study;

2) Evacuated plasma tubes:
4 types based also on additive matters---
a. blue cap tube: with tri-sodium citrate, used for plasma determination of PT, APTT values of blood coagulation test;
b. grey cap tube: with potassium oxalate& sodium heparin, used for analysis of blood sugar& lactate;
c. green cap tube: with either lithium heparin or sodium heparin, &  d. light green tube: with lithium heparin & gel, used for blood collection & anti-coagulation not only for rountine clinical biochemistry & emergency biochemistry determinations but also for serology study;

3) Evacuated whole blood tubes:
2 types according to different additives----
a. purple cap tube: with EDTA, used for whole blood hematology determination & blood type verification;

b. Black cap tube: with 3.2 or 3.8% Sodium Citrate, mainly used for blood collection & antocoagulation rate determination.

All these tubes are made of polyethylene Terephthalate (PET);
